Things to keep in mind when planning

Activities should be open- ended, child-directed, and based on the children's interest. Activities should be presented to children and not dictated to them.
When planning for Science activities follow the criteria for Physical Knowledge. Physical knowledge is exploration through senses, it can only be learned through direct exploration. Physical knowledge process includes: movement of objects, affect the outcome, directly observe reactions, and the reaction should be immediate (Barbour, 2015).
It is important to plan activities based on the children's prior knowledge and experiences. That way children can come up with new ideas, theories, and develop new understandings. When teaching science it important to keep in mind the importance of having the children directly interact with the materials.Topics such as dinosaurs or space travel are not appropriate content to use for big ideas for inquiry-based science because they present no opportunity for direct exploration on the children’s part; those topics can be explored in other areas of the classroom (Worth,2010).
